Death at Olympic Trials

On this tragic day, I think I speak for all of the Drunkrunners when I offer a word of condolence to the family of Ryan Shay, who passed away today during the Olympic marathon trials. Yahoo! Artickle

Nothing else can be said at times like these.

Wow! That is so tragic. He was so young and top in the profession. It is also mysterious, especially at 5.5 miles into the race. I am sure that tragedies like this, the death at the London marathon, and the recent death and disorder at the Chicago marathon aren't recent events, but I suppose I have a heightened sense of awareness now that I am training for one. My thoughts go out to the family.

Mine too. I read an article last night that said he had an enlarged heart (birth defect), which may have caused this. Doctor's also said he was probably dead before he hit the ground, which in some ways is a good thing.
I too keep these events in mind as I train, but I also hope they don't get into the minds of people that might have trained. We do live in a society of fear, thank you Mr. Bush, and it would be a shame to think someone didn't attempt a marathon because an otherwise healthy person died inexplicably.
