Please advise

What in the world id that annoying pain I get in my right side under my lower ribs? It usually "attacks" about mile 2 and lasts a good 5-10 minutes. Then it goes away.

Scooter, it's called a "side stitch" and it is one of the least understood aspects of running and the human body. Some people say putting your hands above your head helps the pain go away, others say you should eat a teaspoon of sugar, others say stop and stretch it out. (OK I made the sugar part up.) The end result is that it does eventually go away. The key is that you run through it. It's not going to stop you from running, and it is not an injury. Have no fear!
The best news is that it eventually goes away completely. I can't remember the last time I had that happen. Maybe 2 years ago? Who knows. It seems to be something that equates with general fitness. When the side stitch goes away you know you are on your way to ROCKSTAR FITNESS!

Good luck.

Yeah, that spasm is what I blogged about a few weeks ago - when I had the sudden realization halfway into my 10 mile run that I hadn't had a side stitch in probably 2 good years... It is that feeling of someone stabbing a knife between your lower two ribs... It sucks, but like Sixpack said, one day you will wake up, run, and it will have vanished miraculously! Just to be safe though, I try to stretch my sides before every run (in the hopes that this pre-run voodoo will ward off any side stitches). I stand on the tip-toe of one foot, stretch upward and bend slightly in the opposite direction with my hands over my head. Switch and repeat on the other side. Here is some more voodoo I read the last time I suffered from side stitches: while running, exhale sharply every time the foot, opposite of the side you are having the pain, hits the ground. That is pretty friggin' hard to do. I figure it is just a way to take your attention off of the pain and to make you focus on something else. Either way, battle through it and it will be gone in no time!!! (Knock on wood I haven't just jinxed myself for tomorrow's run!)
